IBM FlashCore Module 5 — What Has Actually Changed

FlashCore Module 5 is IBM's fifth generation of custom NVMe flash modules for FlashSystem arrays. Released with general availability from 6 March 2026, FCM5 ships in the new EDSFF form factor and is supported exclusively in the new FlashSystem 5600, 7600 and 9600 arrays. It is not backward compatible with older FlashSystem generations.

As an IBM Silver Partner, our view is that FCM5 represents a genuine architectural shift rather than a marginal generational upgrade — primarily because of three things: a measurable improvement in read performance, ransomware detection embedded at the hardware level, and a significant expansion in per-module capacity that changes the economics of dense flash deployments.

IBM FlashCore Module 5 — Key Specifications

FlashCore Module 5 (FCM5)

Fifth-generation NVMe EDSFF flash module with integrated compute for autonomous threat detection, hardware-accelerated data reduction, and up to 105.6TB raw capacity per module.

2.4× Higher read performance vs FCM4
<60s Ransomware detection time
3:1 Inline compression — zero latency penalty
Greater endurance vs commodity SSDs
120+ Telemetry metrics per module
105TB Maximum capacity per module (9600)

FCM5 Available Capacities

FCM5 is available in five capacity options: 6.6TB, 13.2TB, 26.4TB, 52.8TB across the FlashSystem 5600 and 7600, and 105.6TB available exclusively for the FlashSystem 9600. The 105.6TB module is the highest-capacity enterprise NVMe flash module IBM has ever produced.

Where FCM5 Fits — and Where It Does Not

FCM5 aligns most clearly in three situations: organisations running AI inference, analytics, or VDI workloads where read intensity is high and sustained; estates approaching FlashSystem refresh where workload intensity has increased materially since the original deployment; and environments where cyber resilience discussions now extend beyond backup immutability into infrastructure-layer threat detection.

FCM5 is not necessarily the right choice for environments dominated by sustained write-heavy workloads — the 2.4× performance uplift is explicitly focused on read performance rather than balanced read/write throughput. It also requires compatible new-generation arrays — it cannot be retrofitted into older FlashSystem hardware.

Unsure whether FCM5 makes sense for your current environment? We'll look at your workload profile and give you a straight answer.

IBM FlashSystem Range — Current Generation

IBM launched three new FlashSystem models in March 2026 alongside FCM5 availability — the 5600, 7600 and 9600. These replace the 5300, 7300 and 9500, which are withdrawn from marketing on 30 September 2026. All new models use the FCM5 EDSFF form factor and include FlashSystem.ai agentic management capabilities.

FlashSystem.ai — Agentic Storage Management

FlashSystem.ai is IBM's new agentic AI management layer, built into Storage Virtualize 9.1.2 and available on all new FlashSystem arrays. IBM claims it reduces manual storage management tasks by up to 90%, executes thousands of automated decisions per day, and can adapt to application behaviour within hours — explaining its reasoning rather than just taking action silently.

FCM5 drives collect over 120 different telemetry metrics per module — including compression ratios, data access patterns, and I/O statistics. This data feeds FlashSystem.ai continuously, enabling proactive performance tuning, capacity forecasting, and anomaly detection with minimal manual intervention.

Considering a FlashSystem refresh or new deployment? We'll review your workload profile and recommend the right model — 5600, 7600 or 9600.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IBM FlashCore Module 5 (FCM5)?

FCM5 is IBM's fifth-generation NVMe flash module for FlashSystem arrays. It features hardware-accelerated data reduction (up to 3:1 inline compression), ransomware detection in under 60 seconds, 2.4× higher read performance vs FCM4, and up to 105.6TB raw capacity per module. It uses a new EDSFF form factor and is supported only in the FlashSystem 5600, 7600 and 9600.

Which FlashSystem models support FCM5?

FCM5 is supported in the IBM FlashSystem 5600, 7600 and 9600 — all available from March 2026. FCM5 uses a new EDSFF form factor that is not compatible with older FlashSystem generations including the 5300, 7300 and 9500.

What is the difference between FCM4 and FCM5?

FCM5 delivers 2.4× higher read performance than FCM4, uses a new EDSFF form factor (vs U.2 on FCM4), supports higher per-module capacities up to 105.6TB, and introduces enhanced agentic AI integration via FlashSystem.ai. Both generations feature inline ransomware detection under 60 seconds.

How does IBM FlashSystem detect ransomware?

Each FCM5 module collects over 120 telemetry metrics per I/O operation — including data entropy changes and write pattern anomalies. The FlashSystem SVC software aggregates these statistics every 2 seconds and passes them to an AI model that detects ransomware patterns. IBM claims this can identify potential threats in under 60 seconds with fewer than 1% false positives.

Is Fortuna Data an IBM partner?

Yes — Fortuna Data is an IBM Silver Partner, accredited to supply, implement and support IBM storage solutions for UK organisations.

Which IBM FlashSystem is right for my organisation?

The FlashSystem 5600 (2.6M IOPS) suits edge, remote office and smaller deployments. The 7600 (4.3M IOPS) is the mid-range choice for mixed enterprise workloads. The 9600 (6.3M IOPS, up to 3.3PB raw) is designed for large-scale, AI-intensive, mission-critical environments. We review workload profiles before recommending — speak to our team.
