Inside IBM FlashSystem: AI, Density and 60-Second Ransomware Detection

Twenty years in storage, seven of them at IBM, and a job that now has him crossing the UK talking to business partners and customers about IBM's newest FlashSystem hardware โ€” Alex MacIndoe has watched the storage industry shrink from floppy disks and tape drives to petabytes sitting in the palm of a hand. On this episode of Smarter Strategic Thinking, he joins host Ray Quattromini to talk through what's changed with IBM's newest FlashSystem range, and why storage arrays now do a lot more than just store data.

A Career Built From the Ground Up

Alex started out installing, cleaning and fixing tape drives before moving on to disks and arrays โ€” hands-on technical work that gave him a genuine feel for the hardware. From there he moved into pre-sales and consultancy, spent time on the backup side with Veritas and Symantec, and joined IBM around seven years ago. Today he leads FlashSystem sales for IBM in the UK, spending much of his time on the road talking business partners and customers through the range IBM released earlier this year.

Three Models, One Simplified Range

IBM has condensed its FlashSystem line-up down to three models โ€” the 5600, 7600 and 9600 โ€” released in February 2026. Each model steps up in drive slot count, memory and cache as you move up the range, with the 9600 topping out at 22 slots when fully populated. Rather than a broad spread of models, the idea is a simpler choice: pick the model that matches your workload, then scale capacity within it.

How Much Storage Fits in a Hand

The building block behind all three models is IBM's FlashCore Module (FCM) โ€” available in five or six capacity points, so a system doesn't need to be filled with the largest drives from day one. The largest FCM currently shipping holds 105TB, and Alex confirmed IBM expects to reach 200TB per module by the end of 2026. With roughly 5:1 data reduction achievable on suitable data, that puts a genuine petabyte of effective capacity into a single module small enough to hold in one hand โ€” and, by daisy-chaining arrays together, IBM's customers can scale that up to multiple petabytes in a compact footprint.

Note on density figures: Alex referenced IBM's own comparison against Dell, Pure Storage and HPE for a 20PB deployment at a 1:1 ratio (no data reduction applied), putting IBM's footprint at roughly 18U against competitors he said were "over 100U" โ€” but he was candid on camera that he couldn't recall the exact competitor figures. Why IBM Builds Its Own Modules

Unlike vendors who buy in flash components, IBM designs and manufactures its own FlashCore Modules โ€” including memory chip IP developed in the UK. Alex pointed to the reliability track record this has produced: with over a million FCMs shipped, IBM has yet to replace a single one in the field due to wear-out. Building in-house has also helped IBM secure memory chip supply years in advance, keeping lead times on new kit to around 40 days at a time when supply chain delays have been a genuine headache for many buyers.

A CPU on Every Module

The FlashSystem range's standout hardware feature, according to Alex, is that every single FlashCore Module carries its own dedicated CPU โ€” something he says no competitor currently does. That on-module processing power is what lets IBM run hardware-based compression, deduplication and cyber-resilience threat scanning without loading extra work onto the array's main controllers, keeping the performance overhead of those features to a minimum.

FlashSystem AI: A Virtual Storage Admin

New to the 5600, 7600 and 9600 range is FlashSystem AI โ€” a natural-language assistant Alex describes as "a virtual storage admin on your shoulder." Instead of navigating multiple screens, an administrator can type a plain-English request โ€” create a 50TB LUN, assign it to a given host โ€” and FlashSystem AI will summarise what it understood, generate a runbook, and wait for human approval before carrying it out.

It works both reactively, responding to typed requests, and proactively โ€” flagging performance alerts when a workload nears its configured limits, or recommending a workload be moved to a faster or newer FlashSystem when appropriate. Every interaction is logged for audit purposes, which matters for customers in regulated industries who need to demonstrate why a change was made.

Guardrails are built in: the AI hasn't been trained to carry out anything destructive, so a typed delete command is simply rejected as not understood. On top of that, IBM offers a second-approver setting requiring two people to sign off on any destructive action โ€” a deliberate defence against a rogue insider or a simple mistake.

Flash Grid: One View Across Every Site

Where a business runs multiple FlashSystems โ€” potentially a mix of older and newer models โ€” IBM's Flash Grid brings them under a single pane of glass, provided each system is running the latest code. That includes managing policies across sites, such as synchronous or asynchronous replication between a primary and a DR location, without needing to log into separate management consoles for each array.

Ransomware Detection in Under 60 Seconds

Cyber resilience is built into the same per-module CPU. IBM monitors every single I/O and measures its entropy โ€” a mathematical measure of randomness โ€” to spot patterns consistent with ransomware. When the entropy level breaches a set policy, the system logs the event and alerts the administrator. Importantly, it doesn't take any automatic action: no blocking, no shutting anything down. Alex was clear that IBM wants a human making that call, partly because legitimate activity โ€” turning on IBM's own encryption, for example โ€” can otherwise look identical to a ransomware event.

IBM backs detection speed with a contractual guarantee: a ransomware-level event will be detected within 60 seconds. Recovery relies on Safeguarded Copy snapshots, and IBM's Sentinel tool checks a snapshot is clean before an administrator restores to it โ€” because restoring quickly is only useful if you're not restoring the ransomware along with the data. Snapshot capacity itself is effectively limited by available storage space rather than a restrictive logical cap, with systems supporting snapshots into the hundreds or thousands.

What This Means for UK Mid-Market Teams

A recurring theme in the conversation was just how much has changed since customers last refreshed their storage. Many organisations are still running four, five or six racks of kit bought years ago that IBM's newest FlashSystem models can now replace many times over in a fraction of the space โ€” with the AI, automation and cyber-resilience features to match.
