IBM FlashCore Module 5 — What Has Actually Changed
FlashCore Module 5 is IBM's fifth generation of custom NVMe flash modules for FlashSystem arrays. Released with general availability from 6 March 2026, FCM5 ships in the new EDSFF form factor and is supported exclusively in the new FlashSystem 5600, 7600 and 9600 arrays. It is not backward compatible with older FlashSystem generations.
As an IBM Silver Partner, our view is that FCM5 represents a genuine architectural shift rather than a marginal generational upgrade — primarily because of three things: a measurable improvement in read performance, ransomware detection embedded at the hardware level, and a significant expansion in per-module capacity that changes the economics of dense flash deployments.

FCM5 Available Capacities
FCM5 is available in five capacity options: 6.6TB, 13.2TB, 26.4TB, 52.8TB across the FlashSystem 5600 and 7600, and 105.6TB available exclusively for the FlashSystem 9600. The 105.6TB module is the highest-capacity enterprise NVMe flash module IBM has ever produced.
Where FCM5 Fits — and Where It Does Not
FCM5 aligns most clearly in three situations: organisations running AI inference, analytics, or VDI workloads where read intensity is high and sustained; estates approaching FlashSystem refresh where workload intensity has increased materially since the original deployment; and environments where cyber resilience discussions now extend beyond backup immutability into infrastructure-layer threat detection.
FCM5 is not necessarily the right choice for environments dominated by sustained write-heavy workloads — the 2.4× performance uplift is explicitly focused on read performance rather than balanced read/write throughput. It also requires compatible new-generation arrays — it cannot be retrofitted into older FlashSystem hardware.

IBM launched three new FlashSystem models in March 2026 alongside FCM5 availability — the 5600, 7600 and 9600. These replace the 5300, 7300 and 9500, which are withdrawn from marketing on 30 September 2026. All new models use the FCM5 EDSFF form factor and include FlashSystem.ai agentic management capabilities.

FCM5 drives collect over 120 different telemetry metrics per module — including compression ratios, data access patterns, and I/O statistics. This data feeds FlashSystem.ai continuously, enabling proactive performance tuning, capacity forecasting, and anomaly detection with minimal manual intervention.
